What this app is (and is not)

Juneau Carpool is a bulletin board for neighbors who are already going the same way — Valley, Lemon Creek, downtown, Douglas, the ferry, out the road. It is a shared-expense carpool tool, not a taxi, not Uber, not a bus, and not an employer.

We do not dispatch drivers. We do not sell rides. We do not set fares. We do not inspect cars or run background checks. You choose who you ride with.

Gas share, not a hired ride

If you offer or ask for money, treat it as splitting gas and parking — a suggested share between two people already making the trip. It is not a wage, not a fare, and not a tip we collect.

Alaska law treats a transportation-network company (the Uber-style model) differently from a shared-expense carpool. This app is meant to stay on the carpool side of that line. Do not use it as a for-hire taxi or to make driving your job.

Money does not go through us

Juneau Carpool does not process payments. We do not hold your money, take a cut, or move funds through Venmo, PayPal, cash, or anything else.

You may list a Venmo or PayPal.me on your profile. After a ride is accepted, the other person can tap a button that opens Venmo or PayPal — their app, not ours. If you settle up, that is a private arrangement. We are not a party to it. If a payment fails, goes to the wrong person, or is disputed, that is between you, them, and the payment app. We will not refund you.

Insurance and your car

You are responsible for a licensed, registered, insured vehicle and a valid driver's license if you drive.

A personal auto policy often does not cover carrying people for pay. A suggested gas share may still raise questions with an insurer after a crash. That is your policy and your risk. We do not provide livery, commercial, or TNC insurance, and we do not promise your personal coverage will apply.

If you are not sure, ask your insurer before you offer seats.

You ride at your own risk

Getting in a stranger's car — or letting a stranger in yours — has real risk: accident, injury, theft, a bad actor. Reviews and profiles reduce some of that. They do not remove it.

To the fullest extent the law allows, Juneau Carpool and the people who operate it are not liable for what happens in the car, at a pickup, or after a ride: crashes, injury, death, property damage, missed ferries, lost wages, or disputes over money.

You agree that you use the app and any ride you arrange through it at your own risk.

Safety we expect of you

Be 18 or older.

Use your real first name and a real photo. Fake profiles get removed.

Meet at the public pickup spots in the app when you can — lots, stores, the ferry terminal — not a dark driveway.

Do not drive impaired. Do not get in a car with someone who is. Seatbelts on.

If a ride feels wrong, do not get in. Cancel. Trust that.

You are responsible for following Alaska and City and Borough of Juneau traffic laws.

Reviews, chat, and your data

Reviews can only be written after an accepted ride, by the people in that ride. They are opinions. We may remove threats, fake reviews, or abuse.

In-ride chat exists so you can find each other. After both people leave a review, we delete that thread. Do not put bank cards, social security numbers, or anything you would not say in a grocery line.

We store your account, profile, rides, joins, and reviews so the board works. We do not sell your list to advertisers. Live preview data can disappear when the sandbox resets; a deployed app keeps it in its own database.

Accounts

We can suspend or delete an account that is unsafe, fake, harassing, or using the app as a taxi service.

You can stop using the app any time. Stopping does not undo rides you already took or reviews already written.

If we change this

If these terms change in a way that matters, we will ask you to accept the new version before you post or join another ride.

Not legal advice

This page is the agreement between you and the operator of Juneau Carpool. It is not a substitute for talking to a lawyer or your insurance agent about your own situation.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Alaska. If a court finds one part unenforceable, the rest still applies.
